How often should I get my air conditioner professionally cleaned in Far North Queensland?
In our tropical climate, we highly recommend a professional deep hydro-clean at least once every 12 months for residential split systems. If you have a high-use household, suffer from severe allergies, or run a commercial space, scheduling a service every 6 months will keep your system running optimally. In between professional cleans, you should wash your basic mesh filters yourself every 2 to 4 weeks.
My air conditioner is blowing air but it isn't cold. Do I need a clean or a repair?
It could be either! Heavily blocked filters, choked coils, and a dirty barrel fan restrict tropical airflow, making the unit feel like it is blowing warm, inefficient air. However, if the system is completely clean and still failing to lower the room temperature, it may point to a mechanical breakdown, electrical issue, or a refrigerant leak. Why does my aircon smell like vinegar or mould when I turn it on?
That unpleasant smell is a clear sign that mould, mildew, bacteria and fungi have established a colony on your unit’s internal evaporator coils or inside the drain pan. Running a dirty system recirculates these spores back into your living space, triggering allergies, asthma and itchy eyes. A high-pressure chemical hydro-flush completely strips this toxic buildup away and sanitises the unit, restoring clean, healthy air to your home.
What is a professional hydro-clean, and can't I just clean the filters myself?
Rinsing your plastic mesh filters is a great habit, but it only catches surface dust. It does not reach the internal barrel fan, casing airwell, or the microscopic gaps in the metal evaporator coils. Our Full Hydro Clean involves wrapping the unit in a specialised catchment bag and using a safe, pressurised chemical wash to flush out all packed-in debris, clear the external drain lines, and treat the system with anti-bacterial protectants.
Why is my indoor air conditioner leaking water down the wall?
Water leaks are almost always caused by a blocked condensate drain line. Because air conditioners extract massive amounts of humidity out of the FNQ air, that water must drain outside safely. Over time, sludge, mould, or even nesting insects can choke the drain pipe, causing water to back up and overflow inside your home. As part of our standard AC clean, we flush and clear external drain lines to prevent this from happening.
Do geckos really ruin air conditioners, and how can I protect my unit?
Yes, unfortunately, they do! Geckos crawling onto the printed circuit boards (PCBs) of an air conditioner is one of the leading causes of sudden electrical failure in our region, resulting in very expensive repairs. When installing new systems, we recommend choosing reliable brands that feature enhanced internal protection or barriers specifically designed to keep local pests away from delicate electronics. Regular preventative maintenance also ensures your outdoor units remain clear of debris that attracts wildlife.
